Villa Louis Historical Site
Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin
The restoration of Villa Louis faithfully documents the second-generation
Dousman family’s lifestyle during 1885-98, the main period
of the estate’s use as a primary residence. During that time,
an ambitious redecoration project was undertaken in the Italianate
house and adjacent office building/billiard room. Its British Arts
and Crafts décor positioned the residence at the forefront
of Victorian design, during the height of William Morris’ influence
in the United States.
For the present restoration, ceiling and wall papers, paint colors
and fabrics were meticulously researched and reproduced. Investigative
analysis and documentation of the buildings’ structural and
HVAC systems led to sensitively introduced improvements within
the historic architecture, including climate controls for the remarkably
complete collection of family furnishings. |
