Cathedral of St. Andrew
Grand Rapids, Michigan
The restoration of the
Cathedral of St. Andrew celebrates the historic character and architectural
beauty of this place of worship. The exterior restoration included
repair of the distinctive spire and the re-gilding
of its cross, cleaning and re-pointing of the brick
facade, and design of a new barrier-free entrance addition.
Within the cathedral, the soaring proportions
of the neo-Gothic interior architecture has been renewed. Removing
layers of previous alterations has revealed the historic interior
of the worship space, dating from 1903. Ribbed vaults, slender columns,
and a luminous decorative paint scheme contribute to the uplifting,
transformative quality of the space. A constellation of gold leaf
stars at the transept crossing represents the night sky at the time
of the cathedral’s 1883 dedication. |
