Opera House,
John F. Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts
Washington, D.C.
Designed for ballet, opera, and musical theater, the 2,350-seat
Opera House is the home of the Washington National Opera.
The Opera
House is the second of the Kennedy Center’s three major theatres
to be renovated by QUINN EVANS | ARCHITECTS. The primary
goal for the project was to improve accessibility for persons
with disabilities, without losing seat count. Secondary goals were
to
improve technical operations, provide a new sound system and
update the finishes of the early 1970s theater.
The renovation included
the substantial reworking of the auditorium, including the replacement
of the orchestra level floor, the relocation
of the rear auditorium wall at the orchestra and box tier levels,
new architectural lighting and the rebuilding of the balcony
fronts. The project also included the renovation of the existing
restrooms,
redesign of the orchestra level lobby, insertion of a second
house elevator, and other technical improvements. |
