Gari Melchers Studio and Galleries
Belmont Estate, Stafford County, Virginia
Belmont is the former residence of American figure painter Gari Melchers
(1860-1932). A Virginia and National Historic Landmark, the museum
consists of the artist’s home, studio, and gardens.
The restoration of Gari Melchers Studio preserved
one of America’s
most richly detailed and completely furnished artist studios. The
stone studio and galleries house the largest collection of Melchers’ works
anywhere—some 1600 items in all. QE|A restored the historically
significant elements of the 1924 building, while upgrading the
facility to meet current museum standards by integrating state-of-the-art
technologies for climate control, lighting, and security.
A new wing nestled into the steeply sloped hillside wraps around
the southwest corner of the building and more than doubles the size
of the facility. The addition provides space for public programs,
as well as expands the collection storage and exhibition preparation
areas. |
