Cleveland Elementary School
Washington, DC
Built in 1911, Cleveland Elementary School no longer met today's
educational facility standards. It lacked a library, gymnasium,
art room and science room, was not accessible to the people with
disabilities, and required significant upgrades to the engineering
systems.
In revitalizing this historic urban school, QUINN EVANS
| ARCHITECTS designed a new addition to house the largest spaces,
the cafeteria
and gymnasium, as well as a rooftop art room. The addition
is separated from the historic building with a glass and steel
circulation
zone, connected by an entrance canopy to the school's
old Gothic archway, which was relocated to the sidewalk.
The existing
building was reconfigured to create ground floor educational
space, such as the library, computer room and music
room. The high-ceilinged classrooms were maintained, with new
energy-efficient, operable windows. The building systems were
replaced, and state-of-the-art communications and data systems
were integrated into the existing architecture.
The school now has the capacity to serve 360 students from
Head Start through fifth grade in a thoroughly modern facility. |
