Michigan
State Capitol
Lansing,
Michigan As one of the state’s most prominent buildings,
the Michigan State Capitol is a National Historic Landmark. QUINN
EVANS | ARCHITECTS, as an implementing architect, directed the
comprehensive restoration of both the Governor’s Wing interior
and the Capitol’s exterior. Extensive on-site and laboratory testing of
the building’s exterior materials was conducted to establish
the most appropriate treatments for cleaning and consolidating
the sandstone facade and stripping and repainting the dome. Luminaries,
installed around the building’s perimeter and on the roof,
create a dramatic night view of the building and its distinctive
dome. Within the Governor’s Wing, restoring the building’s
Victorian character meant meticulous restorative treatments to
meet museum-quality standards. The design challenge was to respectfully
restore these spaces designed by the original architect, Elija
E. Meyers, and at the same time to integrate necessary building
systems. Achieving this balance meant peeling back layers of
building alterations to restore original spatial relationships,
decorative finishes, architectural fixtures and details, in tandem
with the sensitive introduction of state-of-the-art communications
technologies, HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems appropriate
for the State’s Chief Executive and staff. |
