Boston
Company Store
Cuyahoga
Valley National Recreation Center
Brecksville, Ohio Originally built in 1836, this two-story Greek Revival structure
was linked to trade along the Ohio & Erie Canal, with commercial activities
on the first floor, a hotel or boarding rooms on the second floor,
and storage in the cellar and storehouse. After 1868, the building
housed a general store—a business that continued until 1903
when the building became a residence. The National Park Service acquired the Boston
Store with the intent to create a public meeting place and interpretative
center on the history of canal boat building. QUINN EVANS | ARCHITECTS
prepared an Historic Structure Report, documenting the building’s
condition, as well as its historic episodes, and prepared the
design and construction documentation to implement the report’s
recommendations. This included exterior restoration of architectural
details and structural reinforcement to accommodate new loads
from public use of the structure. The interior was rehabilitated
for public spaces, including design of interpretive exhibits
on canal boat construction. |
