School of Natural Resources and Environment
University of Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan
The renovation of the S.T. Dana Building, located within the University’s
historic core on the “diag,” integrated sustainable
design and historic preservation strategies to achieve a state-of-the-art
science building.
The hundred-year-old building was expanded in place with an addition
in the courtyard and a new fourth floor under exposed skylit steel
trusses. This additional 35,000 square feet combined with reprogramming
the original building enabled the creation of new classrooms, labs,
common areas, and offices for the School’s interdisciplinary educational
and research programs.
Daylighting, natural ventilation, radiant-chilled ceiling panels,
energy-efficient engineering systems, and the use of sustainable
materials all contributed to the “Greening of Dana.” Reuse
was also one of the project’s priorities. Rather than going
to the landfill, the building’s load-bearing brick walls,
over 200 doors, and the old-growth pine timbers from the original
roof structure
were all recycled back into the remodeled building.
The project was led by QUINN EVANS | ARCHITECTS, in collaboration
with William McDonough + Partners.
